Well, after having a Fondue Pot hidden away in my cabinet several years, I finally decided to drag it out and convince my family how much fun that FONDUING would be. Little did I know just how much fun we would have!! First of all the recipes for fondue are Super easy and WHO doesn’t want to dunk food in cheese or chocolate? Just to keep you interested, here’s a picture of how our first course turned out, Beer Cheese Fondue….
The recipe was super easy, I used one 7 oz. bag of Baby Swiss, one 8oz. bag of Kraft 3 cheese mix and about 4 oz of cheddar. I cut the swiss into pieces and then put a Tablespoon and a half of plain flour in with the cheese and stirred it together in a bowl.
I added a 1/2 tsp of Dijon mustard, a dash of worcershire sauce and a cup of Shiner Bock beer. I mixed all of this together on low heat on the stove and when everything started to come together, I transferred it to our Fondue Pot. We had chunks of crusty sour dough bread and an artisan multi grain bread in cubes ready for dipping. We laughed our heads off at each other with cheese strings hanging everywhere– the boys loved it and WOW, was it good. We played X-Box for a little while to prepare for our next course- Filet of beef and mushrooms. We cooked in a beef broth instead of the oil that Jay remembers from having Fondue with his Grandparents. He was very skeptical when I started getting everything ready but you should have seen his face when he pulled that first chunk of beef off of his fork!!
The broth was a much lighter version than the oil that Fondue is typically cooked in and it took minutes to put together. We used almost a whole container of Swansons beef broth, garlic, dried minced onions, salt, pepper and approximately half a cup of white wine. It smelled fantastic!! I loved the quality time that we spent swapping stories and telling jokes while we watched the beef cook. We took turns ” forking” the mushrooms that we halved and let float around as the beef cooked. We started a movie and waited for the next course… Chocolate Ganache fondue!
We dunked Marshmallows, cream puffs, raspberries and strawberries in a mix of semi sweet chocolate and heavy cream and it was outstanding! The guys are STILL talking about it. Granted, it took a little more effort that some of our family cooking experiences but we will definitely FONDUE again soon. The family that Fondues together, has FUN together!
